Joshua On Tyson: ‘He Is My Ultimate Motivation’
Everybody knows Mike Tyson’s story. He started at the bottom and walked out of boxing as one of the top heavyweight fighters in the history of the sport. He also has had some controversial moments. His positive legacy in the sport and his desire to come back has inspired a current heavyweight champion in Anthony Joshua.
Speaking with GQ, Joshua (23-1), the WBA, IBF, WBO, and IBO Heavyweight Champion, talked about Tyson’s (50-6, 2NC) attempted comeback. Tyson will be fighting for the first time since 2005 in exhibition bouts. Looking in phenomenal shape, he looks like the Tyson of old. Joshua discussed what the rush of a return must feel like for someone like Tyson.
“This is what we breathe, this is what we are. And especially someone like ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson, that’s all that man knows,” Joshua stated, via talkSPORT. “So for everyone else it’s a comeback, but for him it’s just what he does. He’s a fighter, right?
“He probably just took a little break, but for everybody else it’s like, ‘Oh my God, Mike Tyson’s making a comeback.’ But for Mike Tyson it’s like, ‘This is what I do, I’m a fighter by nature.’”
In his prime, Tyson was the undisputed heavyweight champion. He controlled the late eighties with his insane power. The youngest heavyweight champion at 20, a Tyson fight was always a must-see affair.
Several entities have requested to have him join them, like Bare Knuckle FIghting Championship. Former foe Danny Williams, who is still active, wants to compete in a competitive contest. One fight that entices Tyson is a trilogy bout with Evander Holyfield, who also announced his intentions to return to the ring.
Boxing to separating himself from the rest, Joshua has become one of the top fighters in the world today. His passion for the sport is why he respects Tyson’s determination.
“If he’s back in the ring, I would love to see it, I would definitely be one of the viewers, that’s for sure… The guy took himself from his neighborhood – which wasn’t the prettiest of scenes – up to an amateur champion, youngest heavyweight champion, one of the most recognized faces of the sport of boxing,” Joshua went on to say.
“In my opinion the only two faces in boxing that are recognized globally are Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson. So from where he started, to where he is now, he is my ultimate motivation. He’s the closest guy to my generation so he holds a special place in my heart.”
