Joshua Preparing For Potential Klitschko Rematch
Anthony Joshua is aiming to start training camp for the proposed November 11th rematch against Wladimir Klitschko at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena late this month, but is in a holding pattern until Klitschko confirms the fight.
And while time ticks down for Joshua, a potential alternative in the form of Bulgarian mandatory challenger Kubrat Pulev waits in the wings. Joshua is hoping that Klitschko will put pen to paper before the end of the month so both can start training camp on a proposed date of August 22nd.
In an interview Joshua seemed to be baiting one half of the famous fighting family, claiming that…
“(Klitschko’s) not going to top what he’s already done but for 10 years people said he was boring because he was so dominant, but he got a lot of respect in defeat, so that should give him a real motivation (for a rematch).”
“He’s got another chance to do it. I’d do it if I was him.”
Almost as soon as the bell rang after their fight in April, Klitschko insisted he had conceded victory by not pursuing the stoppage when in the sixth round he heavily dropped Joshua for the first time in his professional career.
Some are suggesting that his older brother Vitali has apologised to him after advising him from the corner to remain patient, before Joshua gradually recovered and secured victory in the 11th round.
Joshua, however, has dismissed both as “nonsense”, even repeating the admission of Klitschko’s late trainer Manny Steward that the Ukrainian lacks “killer instinct”.
“(But) he was cautious: he knows that if he comes steaming in he’s going to get knocked out himself, he was jittery, he was tired as well. There’s a lot more to it. It’s not that he let me off the hook: I don’t think I gave him an opportunity to finish me.”
UPDATE: In an interview with Sky Sports Promoter Eddie Horn said in regards to landing the November 11th fight.
“At the moment, everything is geared towards Wladimir Klitschko in Las Vegas. There are some interesting dynamics to the commercials of the deal, which we are working through with [Klitschko’s manager] Bernd Boente.”
