Anthony Joshua (30-4, 27 KOs) and Tyson Fury (36-2-1, 25 KOs) are reportedly expected to fight in New York later this year.

Plans to stage the fight in Britain are now unlikely to proceed. No venue or date has been confirmed, but the bout remains targeted for November, with Madison Square Garden reportedly the preferred location.

The main obstacle preventing the fight from taking place at Wembley Stadium is the proposed start time. Organizers want the main event to begin no earlier than 2 a.m. in the UK to attract a larger international audience.

Wembley operates under an 11 p.m. curfew, and an extension would require approval from the stadium’s safety advisory group. Brent Council, which is part of that group, had reportedly not been contacted about extending the curfew for the proposed November date.

Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, has maintained that the signed agreement requires the fight to take place in Britain.

“There has been some murmuring of the fight taking place in the US. The contract specifically states that the fight must take place in the UK. That doesn’t tally up with the contract that we signed,” Hearn said. “Until we’re happy, we expect every point of that contract to be followed.”

Joshua has also made it clear that he expected the fight to take place at Wembley.

“When these conversations started, there was no other venue or location that was ever mentioned. You’ll be fighting Tyson Fury in the UK, basically Wembley,” Joshua said.

Moving the fight outside Britain would require Joshua’s side to agree to revised terms. However, those financing the event reportedly believe New York would allow the fight to reach a larger audience.

Dana White gave a similar assessment when asked about the negotiations.

“You go wherever the money is. Where’s the money? Go where the money is,” White said.

Fury has not publicly stated where he wants the fight to take place. After defeating Mariusz Wach in Thailand on July 24, he said he was waiting for the remaining details to be finalized.

“Hopefully the next big fight is signed next week, and we head wherever we’re going to head,” Fury said.
