Juarez-Nava Set For May Superfight In Mexico

Two of the top boxers in Mexico, and pioneers for women within the sport, will finally face off. It was announced that Mariana Juarez and Jackie Nava are set to clash.

The fight will take place on May 9 and will be for Mariana’s WBC Bantamweight Championship as well as the Diamond Championship. The WBC made the announcement at a celebration in Mexico City.

Mariana (54-9-4) is one of the most successful fighters to come out of Mexico. The 40-year-old is on an eleven-fight win streak dating back to 2016. She has held the WBC Bantamweight Title since December 2016, and has defended the belt ten times. With 18 wins via knockout, “Barbie” is a true trailblazer. She became the first female champion for the WBC in 2005.

Juarez faces another Mexican standout in Nava (35-4-4), who has not lost a fight since 2011 against Ana Maria Torres. “La Princesa Azteca” won eleven fights in a row following that loss. Her last bout was a majority decision draw against Marcela Eliana Acuna back in May.

This fight is another addition to a stacked 2020 for women’s boxing. Fights announced announced include Katie Taylor v. Amanda Serrano and Cecilia Braekhus v. Jessica McCaskill. A location for the bout has not been provided yet.
