Judoka Loses Gold For Doping

Olympic champion Judoka Rafaela Silva was stripped of a gold medal last month, after failing a drug test for the Pan American Games.

Winner of the 57-kg category during the event in Lima, Peru, Silva can appeal the decision in an attempt to retain the same medal she won during the 2016 Olympic games in Rio.

Silva and six other athletes failed in-competition tests back in August.

“We have concluded the process for seven cases which resulted in the athletes being disqualified from the Games as well as their medals and performances forfeited and removed,” organizers said. “The results management process has been lengthy as we have ensured that the athletes’ rights have been fully respected, especially in relation to confidentiality.”

Silva confirmed that she tested positive for fenoterol, a drug used to treat asthma, which she claims was in her system due to frequent contact with a seven month old child that sufferes from asthma.
