July UFC Event Adds Jimmie Rivera Vs. Cody Stamann
After losing a bantamweight bout for its July 15 “Fight Island” event, the UFC has decided to replace it with two other bantamweights.
MMA Fighting was the first to report that Jimmie Rivera will face Cody Stamann. Due to the timing, the bout will reportedly be a 145-pound affair. This comes after Pedro Munhoz tested positive for COVID-19, forcing him out of his bout against Frankie Edgar. It appears that Edgar will not get a chance to make his bantamweight debut just yet.
Rivera (22-4) is 1-3 in his last four fights and is on a two-fight losing streak. In two fights in 2019, he lost to Aljamain Sterling and eventual contender Petr Yan, both via unanimous decision. A former KOTC Flyweight (135 lbs) Champion, Rivera is 6-3 with the UFC.
On the other side, Stamann (19-2-1) is 2-1-1 in his last five fights. Debuting with the UFC in 2017, “Spartan” has won five fights with the promotion. After losing to Sterling via submission in 2018, Stamann has beaten Alejandro Perez, fought Song Yadong to a draw, and beat Brian Kelleher this past June at UFC 250.
Both Rivera (#9) and Stamann (#10) are right next to one another in the UFC’s bantamweight rankings.
The main event of the July 15 “Fight Island” card will be Dan Ige v. Calvin Kattar.
