Justin Gaethje Aims To “Ruin” UFC’s Plans By Beating Khabib Nurmagomedov
Justin Gaethje feels it’s him against the world going into his clash with Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Gaethje and Nurmagomedov will collide in a title unification bout on October 24. “The Highlight” holds the interim UFC Lightweight Championship, while Nurmagomedov is the main titleholder. An undisputed champion will be crowned at UFC 254 barring a draw or No Contest.
While Gaethje and Nurmagomedov have the same manager, Ali Abdelaziz, Gaethje even feels slighted by him it seems. The interim champion said the following during his appearance on Morning Kombat (h/t Fightful.com).
“I’m here to ruin Ali’s day. I’m here to ruin Dana White’s day. I’m here to ruin Daniel Cormier’s day. I’m here to ruin Javier Mendez’s day. I’m here to ruin Khabib Nurmagomedov’s day. Fuck all those guys,” Gaethje said emphatically. “I don’t know what their plan is [for Nurmagomedov] but they said they have a plan ahead. I’m going to fuck it up. They’re going to change my nickname from ‘The Highlight’ to ‘2020.’”
Nurmagomedov said that the UFC has something big planned for him if he defeats Gaethje. Abdelaziz claimed that the announcement has nothing to do with fighting Conor McGregor or Georges St-Pierre. Abdelaziz noted that he wanted others to show respect to Gaethje as he feels he’s a credible threat to Khabib’s title.
Up to this point, Nurmagomedov has gone unbeaten in his pro MMA career. He has a perfect record of 28-0. Some feel that Gaethje’s fighting style might be enough to dethrone “The Eagle.” That’s because Gaethje has top-notch striking ability with his hands and he has solid takedown defense.
