Justin Gaethje Earns Lightweight Title In Upset Victory Over Ilia Topuria
In the headlining bout of UFC Freedom 250 from the White House, Justin Gaethje came in as a big underdog, but left a champion after battering Topuria into a state in which he could not continue.
Gaethje has been competing in the UFC’s lightweight division since 2017, following a 10-0 run with PFL predecessor ‘World Series of Fighting’. He is a two-time interim champion who failed to grasp 155-pound gold against both Khabib Numagomedov in 2020 and Charles Oliveira in 2022. Now, in his third attempt at the belt, in what many are considering the twilight of his career, and against arguably his toughest challenge yet, he has finally achieved his championship aspirations.

The fight got started in high-octane fashion, with both fighters landing hard shots, and Gaethje attempting to draw Topuria into a pure firefight. Despite both fighters absorbing a decent amount of punches, only Topuria was showing damage on his face by the end of the opening round, which became a serious problem later in the fight.
In the second round, Topuria seemed to take a more calculated approach and delivered multiple body shots to his opponent, stunning Gaethje with one hard shot in particular to the liver before bringing the fight to the canvas. Once on the ground, Topuria attempted both the mounted triangle and armbar submissions, which were reasonable attempts to finish the fight, but the American managed to survive the round despite the onslaught.
In the next round, Gaethje knew he had to shift the momentum, and he took advantage of the fact that Topuria seemed to be moving slower, possibly because he was tired from attempting to finish the fight early. Picking his opportunity carefully, Gaethje stepped forward with a jab, with an overhand right directly behind it. The punch connected flush and sent Topuria into a world of trouble.

Topuria fought through the round and even convinced the ringside physicians he could continue into the fourth, but the continued punches to his already battered face were clearly affecting his abilities. The round ended with Gaethje delivering a punishing knee to Topuria’s ribs, as he was on all fours following a failed takedown attempt.
With their fighter on the stool between rounds, Topuria’s corner stopped the fight, providing an escape from a punishing battle that Gaethje felt right at home in.

During the post-fight interview, Joe Rogan described the match as ‘one of the biggest upsets in the history of the sport’. Wearing his newly earned UFC lightweight title belt, even Gaethje himself seemed shocked that he had come out on top in the match and achieved 155-pound gold. To make things even more surreal, Gaethje and his family were joined during their in-octagon celebration by the President, First Lady, and other members of the Trump family.
While Gaethje has discussed retirement in the past, he did not make it clear if he will continue fighting. If he does plan to defend his title, it is expected that he will square off with the No. 2 ranked Arman Tsarukyan, if Topuria doesn’t receive an immediate rematch.
