Justin Gaethje Says UFC 254 Paycheck Will Help Mom Retire
Justin Gaethje’s UFC 254 payday will be strong enough that his mother can retire.
Gaethje is the interim UFC Lightweight Champion. This Saturday, October 24, Gaethje will collide with the main UFC Lightweight Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. The title unification fight will headline UFC 254. The action is being held inside the Flash Forum on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi.
During the pre-fight press conference, Gaethje revealed that his mother will be able to retire thanks to his UFC 254 paycheck (h/t MMAJunkie.com).
“If this fight starts, if that bell rings at the beginning, then I will secure that she will retire after this fight. She’s been there for 35 years.”
Gaethje’s past earnings have helped his father retire as well. “The Highlight” has made it clear that he’s doing all he can to give back to his parents.
“Every piece of money they had went into me and my brother and my sister, giving me the opportunities. We were two hours from any city. Going school-clothes shopping was a vacation for us. We’d get up and go to wrestling tournaments. We had to drive two to three hours. Sometimes, we’d have to stay the night. They financially took hits every single time we did that. Nothing is better than being able to repay that.”
Gaethje is hoping to become the first man to dethrone Nurmagomedov. “The Eagle” has a perfect pro MMA record of 28-0. Meanwhile for Gaethje, he’s riding a four-fight winning streak. In that span, Gaethje has beaten Tony Ferguson, Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone, Edson Barboza, and James Vick. All of those bouts ended via knockout or TKO.
