Kakuryu Wins Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament

It went down to the wire but in the end it was Kakuryu, the Mongolian Yokozuna, who stood as champion at the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament.

Kakuryu bested Ozeki Terunofuji in a playoff on the tournament’s final day to win the competition.

Terunofuji forced a playoff when he took down leader Kakuryu in the final bout of regulation to leave both men with 12-3 records at Ryogoku Kokugikan.

Kakuryu got his revenge in the playoff, capturing his first win since becoming a Yokozuna.

“I’m relieved. I haven’t been able to win a championship since I became a yokozuna and it was tough and played on my mind but I am glad I kept on trying,” said Kakuryu.
