Kamaru Usman Becomes New UFC Welterweight Champion – March 2, 2019 (This Day In MMA History)
Kamaru Usman was the one who dethroned Tyron Woodley, and he did so in stunning fashion.
Usman was awarded a five-round unanimous decision, claiming Woodley’s welterweight title. The win extended the Nigerian’s undefeated streak to 10, something that has yet to be scathed today.
Usman controlled much of the fight from the get-go. He continuously took advantage of every opening and stunned Woodley with non-stop body shots and short elbows.
“Kamaru came out and he brought it,” Woodley said at the time.
“Sometimes you have those fights in the Octagon where you feel like it’s a bad dream. You see the opportunities but you don’t take them. He came out prepared.”
“How long have you been telling them now that can’t nobody hang with me?” Usman said after the fight.
“… I will be honest, I might not be the best striker in the world, I might not be the best pure wrestler in the world, but when it comes to mixing this sh– up, I’m the f–ing best welterweight on the planet right now.”
