Kamaru Usman Influences MMA Promotion In Nigeria

MMA is on the rise in Africa, and some credit can go to UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman.

Since becoming a UFC champion, Usman has lobbied for increased MMA participation in Africa. He’s currently the main force behind a new mixed martial arts event slated for Lagos.

54, a new mixed martial arts promotion, will stage its debut event, according to The Cable. Usman will participate in the event and has already started marketing it on social media.

According to the organizers, this is the first of a series of “Premiere MMA” events. Five Nigerian fighters and five athletes from other African countries will compete in this event.

“54 announces the first-ever face-off fight night in Africa’s most-populated city, Lagos as it brings mixed martial art fighters to slug it out in a bid to leave an impeccable MMA imprint in Nigeria and by extension, the African continent,” a press release stated.

Usman and fellow UFC African champions, Francis Ngannou and Israel Adesanya, have been working to popularize the sport across the continent.

They’ve all been advocating for similar programs like this to be developed, for training to be provided, and for other resources to be made available to Africans.

Usman and Ngannou have asked the UFC to have an event in their hometown in the future.

The first “54” event took place at the Lagos Continental Hotel on January 7, 2022, at 8 p.m.
