Kamaru Usman Picks Up Big Win At UFC Chile

It may not have been the exciting stoppage win Kamaru Usman had hoped for, but he still got a big win over top-5 welterweight contender Demian Maia.

In the main event of UFC Chile, Usman picked up the win over Maia via wide unanimous decision (50-45, 49-46, 49-46) to win his eighth consecutive fight in the UFC. Usman’s long win streak is the second-longest win streak in the history of the UFC’s welterweight division behind Georges St-Pierre.

Maia had his best round in the first round of the fight, but that was the extent of his offense. Maia was able to get Usman in an abdominal stretch and land several punches, but Usman was saved by the referee when he restarted the fight.

From that point forward, Usman managed to land several clean shots that took down Maia but Usman was unable to finish him. Maia tried to take down Usman, but was mostly unsuccessful. Usman dropped Maia in the fourth round when Usman landed a right hand to Maia’s jaw. That would be the closest Usman came to finishing Maia.

In a post-fight interview, Usman said he was excited to face a top-5 fighter in Maia and proud of the fact that he dominated the fight.

“For all the talk of I’ve never faced a top-10 fighter, I just met a legend of the game, two-time title challenger, and I dominated him,” Usman said.

Rising undefeated women’s strawweight Tatiana Suarez continued to stay undefeated with an impressive rear-naked choke victory over Alexa Grasso. Grasso tried to avoid going to the ground against the world-class wrestler, but Suarez was able to use her superior grappling skills to take down Grasso and submit her.
