The current UFC welterweight champ, Kamaru Usman believes that the whole world would watch a fight between himself and Canelo Alvarez.
But first, Usman (20-1, 9 KOs) has got another assignment in his hands as he is set to defend his title against Britain’s Leon Edwards this August 20 inside the Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah.
While on the other hand, Canelo has also got his work cut out as he meets his long-term ring-foe Gennadiy Golovkin in a trilogy fight on September 17.
Responding to Usman’s comments, the Mexican phenom took a jibe at UFC champion saying that it’s nothing but just an excuse for a big payday.
Canelo believes Usman is no match for his boxing skills and that he should stay in his domain if he wants to make a name for himself.
But in an interview with TMZ, Usman shared completely opposite views about the possible matchup and added that Canelo’s next fight date was meant for him, not GGG.
“That’s supposed to be our date,” Usman said.
“That was supposed to be my date with Canelo but of course he found someone else to dance with. GGG, the trilogy, that’s an incredible fight. That’s definitely something I’m paying attention to and watching.”
Usman further added that this fight would attract the masses and he has the potential to pull off an upset against the boxer.
“Let’s be honest in this era right now he’s one of the best to do it. It’s never been done, pound-for-pound versus pound-for-pound, and significantly close in weight classes to be able to do it. Why not?” Usman added.
“I know a lot of people hate on it [but] there’s been crazier things happen and that has happened. And I don’t think there’s going to be anyone in the world who’s not watching that fight. Even though they want to hate on it but when you get that fight announced everyone will be watching that fight.”
