Kamaru Usman Thought About Moving Up To Light Heavyweight

Kamaru Usman wanted to become a double champion.

But unlike other double champions, he wanted to move up by two divisions – to light heavyweight — because he does not want to fight his native brother Israel Adesanya, who is the middleweight champion.

He was willing to fight with Jan Blachowicz, but Blachowicz could not defend his belt against Glover Teixeira.

“I was going to skip Israel and go fight Jan at 205 [pounds],” Usman told GQ. “Because I’m pound-for-pound, I want to prove it. No matter what weight it is, I thought he was a really good matchup for me.

“I think I would beat him.”

Teixeira already has his eyes set on defending his belt against Jiri Prochazka, so this fight might never happen.

Usman defended his belt against Colby Covington for the second time and won via unanimous decision.

Blachowicz was set to take on Aleksandar Rakic on March 26, but MMA Fighting reported that Blachowicz has been forced out due to an injury. The UFC has yet to confirm the report.
