Kelvin Gastelum Vs. Jack Hermansson Fight Reportedly Set For UFC’s ‘Fight Island’ In July

Two middleweights are looking to get back into the win column this summer. One of them has already defied all the odds. According to ESPN, Kelvin Gastelum and Jack Hermansson have verbally agreed to fight one another on July 18.

The location for the bout appears to be on “Fight Island”, which was later confirmed by MMA Junkie.

Gastelum (15-5, 1 NC) hasn’t fought since November 2019, when he lost to Darren Till via split decision at UFC 244. He is 2-3 in his last six with one no-contest. The 28-year-old suffered a full tear in his LCL that required surgery. During this time, he was fined by the New York State Athletic Commission after holding onto another member of his team while on the scale during weigh-ins.

The former UFC Middleweight Title contender was recently suspended nine months by USADA for testing positive for marijuana. Due to Gastelum completing a drug treatment program, the sentence was reduced to five months.

Hermansson (20-5) last fought in September, losing to Jared Cannonier via TKO. That ended a four-fight win streak dating back to 2018. “The Joker” was supposed to face Chris Weidman back on May 2 in Oklahoma City. However, the bout was postponed as well as the card due to the coronavirus. The bout was meant to be Chris Weidman’s return to middleweight.

Right next to one another in the UFC’s middleweight rankings, Hermansson (#6) and Gastelum (#7) will look to one-up one another and find their way to championship glory.

UFC President Dana White has recently stated the first “Fight Island” event will be on June 27. No other matchups have been announced yet for the July 18 card.
