Ketlen Vieira Vs. Yana Kunitskaya Reportedly Signed For August 1 UFC Event
Another big bantamweight fight is looking to take over an August event for the UFC.
Rising star Ketlen Vieira has reportedly signed a deal to fight former featherweight title contender Yana Kunitskaya. With August 1 as the date, a location or place has not been confirmed as of this moment. MMA Junkie was the first to report the matchup.
Vieira (10-1) joined the UFC in 2016 and quickly impressed. The 28-year-old won four fights with the promotion before suffering her first loss against Irene Aldana at UFC 245 in December. She suffered from a knee injury in 2018 that kept her out of action until that time. Vieira was supposed to face Marion Reneau on May 9 but the bout was postponed due to the coronavirus.
A former Invicta FC Bantamweight Champion, Kunitskaya made her UFC debut in March 2018. At UFC 222, she lost to Cris Cyborg for the UFC Featherweight Championship via TKO in the first round. Kunitskaya rebounded with wins over Lina Lansberg and Reneau. Her last fight was in December, losing to Aspen Ladd via TKO.
Vieira (#7) and Kunitskaya (#8) are in the middle of the UFC’s bantamweight rankings. A win could propel either of them towards the top five.
This bantamweight bout joins a card headlined by another bantamweight matchup between Holly Holm (#2) v. Irene Aldana (#5). With UFC Bantamweight Champion Amanda Nunes looking to take time off, and even considering retirement, this could be a big night for the division to step up.
