Now, a fight between Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov is in the works for the latter’s next defense of the UFC lightweight title, but we’ve been here before.
This fight has been postponed and canceled more times than Dr. Dre’s Detox album, but the odds seem to be in their favor this time.
That does not mean Dana White does not have an absurd backup plan in-case a deal does not happen, Ferguson falls off a cliff, or Conor McGregor throughs a boulder through a McDonald’s window.
“Tony Ferguson is the fight that needs to happen,” White said to TMZ. “We’ve tried to do it four other times, so hopefully we can get it done this time. But that’s the fight that makes sense.”
While that is the “fight that needs to happen,” Nurmagomedov’s agent Ali Abdelaziz infers that a fight with Georges St-Pierre is what’s next for the lightweight champion.
“That can happen, too,” White said.
“We’ll see what happens with Tony. Tony’s had opportunities before that he didn’t take, so if he doesn’t, then I would be interested in talking about ‘GSP.’”
