Khabib Nurmagomedov looked well and slim on Dec. 28 at the UFC 219 media day, one day prior to the weigh-ins and two days before his co-main event bout with Edson Barboza. Some have considered this bout to be a potential title eliminator, but things could have been much different for Nurmagomedov earlier this year.
Nurmagomedov and current interim UFC Lightweight Champion Tony Ferguson were scheduled to clash for the interim title at UFC 209 back in March. But mere days before the event, Nurmagomedov was pulled from the bout, feeling unwell due to an improper weight cut. It wasn’t the first time he missed the 155-pound mark in his career either; the unbeaten fighter, who has competed at lightweight since his UFC debut in 2012, missed weight prior to his May 2013 bout with Abel Trujillo at UFC 160.
But Nurmagomedov said on Thursday that while he still has a few more pounds to lose, he felt in great condition. However, he reveals that a move down in weight may be on the horizon.
“I am already on weight,” Nurmagomedov said. “I have a couple pounds [to lose]. We’re thinking about 145 now. We’ll see about this, but, first of all, I’m going to fight this fight and beat Edson Barboza, and I’m going to fight with [interim champion] Tony Ferguson, and after I’m thinking about going to 145.”
