Khabib Joins Makhachev’s Camp For The Poirier Fight

Khabib Nurmagomedov has joined Islam Makhachev’s training camp ahead of UFC Lightweight Title defense against Dustin Poirier on June 1 at UFC 302.

The fight will be Islam’s third defense of his title, which he secured against Charles Oliveira at UFC 280 in 2022. He enters the fight with the biggest wins of his career. He defeated Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 284 and 294, taking his MMA record to 25-1. Khabib knows what it takes to face Poirier, having beaten him at UFC 254.

That insight from Khabib could be vital since Poirier is on a mission to win his first world title before he retires. However, there were also suggestions that Khabib could make a UFC comeback. This was after reports that the fighter had his bank account frozen for unpaid taxes, amounting to $3 million to the Russian government. Khabib’s team shut that down, as his former coach Javier Mendez ruled out a return.

“I’m just letting you guys know that, you know, stop all this nonsense [on the internet] regarding Khabib [coming back to the UFC] and me and him training. There’s been no such thing happening. We’re not discussing training. We never have. Khabib is still devoted to what he said [about not fighting again]. He’s devoted his time to his family. He’s not working people’s corners. He’s not gonna ever fight. To my knowledge, it has never been spoken about,” Mendez said
