Khabib Joins Makhachev’s Corner For The Poirier Fight

Islam Makhachev will have Khabib Nurmagomedov in his corner for his bout with Dustin Poirier at UFC 302 on June 1.

The UFC Lightweight Champion defends his belt for the third time against Poirier, who is chasing his first world title. Makhachev successfully defended the belt twice, beating Alexander Volkanovski in consecutive fights after picking up the title against Charles Oliveira at UFC 280 in 2022.

Khabib joined Makhachev’s camp, giving the champion an edge since The Eagle has experience in fighting Poirier. They faced off in 2019 as Khabib won via a submission in the third round. Before that, Poirier was on the verge of choking Khabib out. Having Khabib in the corner will only aid Islam come fight night.

“Dustin is very experienced; he’s been in many battles already. Yes, he has lost, but he also has many victories in the UFC, more than 22 or 23 wins. Using our slang, he is a seasoned warrior. You can’t take him lightly. We have great respect for Dustin, but on June 1, he is our opponent. We have a clearly developed plan for the fight, and I believe Islam will follow it. I really hope that Islam will finish him off in the second or third round,” Nurmagomedov stated
