Khabib Nurmagomedov May Be Swayed To Retire At 30-0

Khabib Nurmagomedov has a chance at retiring with a perfect record and he may just hang his gloves up if he gets to 30-0.

Nurmagomedov is the UFC Lightweight Champion. He’ll collide with interim champion Justin Gaethje in a title unification bout on Saturday, October 24. The bout will take place inside the Flash Forum on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi.

Nurmagomedov has a pro MMA record of 28-0 going into his battle with Gaethje. “The Eagle” hasn’t competed since September 2019 when he submitted Dustin Poirier. He was expected to take on Tony Ferguson earlier this year but travel issues due to the COVID-19 pandemic put a halt to that plan. Gaethje ended up defeating Ferguson via fifth-round TKO to capture the interim 155-pound gold.

Ahead of UFC 254, Nurmagomedov spoke to Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports. During the interview, Nurmagomedov discussed the possibility of ending his career with a record of 30-0 (via The Body Lock).

“Honestly, I don’t know. 30-0 is going to be great. It’s looking good, it sounds good. 30-0, okay. It’s going to be a great record, this is like Mayweather in MMA. We’ll see, I’m very close to it.”

Nurmagomedov has already built a legacy with his unbeaten streak. He has defeated the likes of Conor McGregor, Poirier, Rafael dos Anjos, and Al Iaquinta. If he can beat Gaethje, it’ll add to his already impressive resume.

UFC 254 will also feature a pivotal middleweight matchup between Robert Whittaker and Jared Cannonier. UFC President Dana White has said that if Cannonier wins, he’ll likely get the next shot at Israel Adesanya’s UFC Middleweight Championship.
