Khabib Nurmagomedov Vs. Justin Gaethje Reportedly Taking Place At UFC 253 In September
Following a wild series of events that brought us to UFC 249, Justin Gaethje became the interim UFC Lightweight Champion. He has stated he is ready to face champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. Now, it appears the fight is officially on.
Combate is reporting that the undisputed UFC Lightweight Title fight between Nurmagomedov (28-0) and Justin Gaethje (22-2) will take place on September 19 at UFC 253. Reports are going around that the fight could take place on “Fight Island”, set to take place on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. UFC President Dana White was hoping to get the fight done at the location sometime during the summer.
Nurmagomedov last fight in September 2019, beating Dustin Poirier to unify the UFC Lightweight Title. The fight also took place on Yas Island. Before that, he faced Conor McGregor at UFC 242 and was suspended following a brawl with McGregor and his team.
Gaethje beat Tony Ferguson at UFC 249 to win the interim title. Landing over 100 significant strikes, “The Highlight’s” left hook was able to badly bruise the face of Ferguson. The referee called the fight off in the fifth round following a few hard shots, awarding Gaethje the win. It was his fourth win in a row, and he is now 5-2 in the UFC.
Original plans had Nurmagomedov and Ferguson facing off at the original UFC 249 in Brooklyn back in April. Due to the coronavirus, Nurmagomedov ended up returning to Russia to quarantine. Due to travel restrictions and lack of location for the event at the time, the champion decided to stay there. It was one of the many times a fight between the two was postponed, whether it be a result of weight issues or an injury suffered by one of the fighters.
As of this moment, no other fights have been announced yet for UFC 253.
