Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson Still A Possibility

Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson may still come to fruition despite being derailed several times.

Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson has been one fight that fans believe is cursed. The UFC has attempted to book “The Eagle” vs. “El Cucuy” in the past but it never panned out. Injuries and illnesses on both sides put a halt to initial plans and the COVID-19 pandemic is to blame for their most recent booking being canned. Ferguson ended up facing Justin Gaethje for the interim UFC Lightweight Title but he lost via fifth-round TKO.

Speaking to Sports Illustrated, UFC President Dana White revealed that even with all the failed bookings, he hasn’t given up on Khabib vs. Ferguson.

“If Khabib does beat Gaethje, you get Tony Ferguson another fight, which we’re working on right now. And hopefully that fight with Khabib happens because I know people want to see it. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a fight fall apart as many times as those two. It almost scares me to make the fight again. What’s going to happen? An asteroid comes to earth? That’s the level of bad this thing is.”

Nurmagomedov is set to face Gaethje in a title unification bout. The championship fight will take place on October 24 inside the Flash Forum on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. This will be Nurmagomedov’s third title defense. He’s had successful title defenses against Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier, submitting both men.

Ferguson was riding a 12-fight winning streak before running into Gaethje. He hadn’t lost a fight since May 2012. “El Cucuy” will be hoping to get back on the horse when he eventually steps back inside the Octagon. The UFC was hoping to have Ferguson fight Poirier at UFC 254 but negotiations with “The Diamond” fizzled out.
