Khabib Nurmagomedov’s Eagle FC All Set For US Debut In January
Khabib Nurmagomedov has been a busy man ever since he hung his gloves and left the lightweight division to fight for the UFC crown he vacated.
Speaking to ESPN, the MMA veteran explained how he plans to expand his promotion, Eagle FC, into the United States. The 33-year-old bought the Gorilla Fighting Championship last year, then named it after his nickname “The Eagle.”
Within a year, the promotion has held over 15 events in different parts of Russia.
In January, Eagle FC will have a big event in Miami followed by another event in March.
Nurmagomedov revealed that his promotion will sign 50 or more fighters soon. He acknowledges the US as the heart of MMA.
“If you want to become big in MMA, you have to be in the USA,” Nurmagomedov said. “For fighters, for promotion, you have to be in the US If you’re not in the US, you can never become No. 1 or best. It’s almost impossible.”
The former undefeated champ knows that the UFC sits pretty at the top and doesn’t intend to become a rival to Dana White’s brand just now.
“It’s not a secret the UFC is the best in the world,” the Eagle said, who retired with a 29-0 MMA record after defending his lightweight crown against Justin Gaethje.
“Almost 30 years these guys, the UFC, have done a great show around the world. UFC is a great brand. I don’t want to compete with them or other promotions. I have my principles. I have my view.”
