Khabib Says Tony Ferguson Would Have Needed A Lucky Opening To Win If They Had Fought

During a recent podcast appearance, Khabib Nurmagomedov touched on his bout with Tony Ferguson that never came to fruition.

Khabib and Ferguson were set to meet on several occasions in the last five years of the undefeated former lightweight champion’s time with the UFC, which he closed the book on in 2020 following his submission of Justin Gaethje. While the bout never materialized, it seems to be a hot talking point as of late, with Ferguson in the late stages of his fighting career.

On one of the latest episodes of The “Inspire Me” podcast, Khabib revisited their bout that was never meant to be, mentioning specifically that the only way “El Cucuy” would have been able to win would be if he found a rare opportune opening to capitalize upon.

”My game is worse for him, he doesn’t have wrestling, grappling so what’s he gonna do with me? How’s he gonna stop me? Only chance he’d have to stop me is a lucky punch. Like with everybody: Conor, Poirier, Justin Gaethje. They talk about ‘They can stop him if they get a lucky punch.”

Ferguson most recently squared off with Michael Chiesa earlier this month in Abu Dhabi, but faced adversity early on, leading to a 1st round submission loss, and his 8th straight UFC defeat.

While Ferguson is currently facing hard times in his career, and discussing the topic of retiring, what needs to be remembered is the impact he had on the UFC during his prime, and the legendary winning streak that he at one time found himself on.
