Khabib Tells Justin Gaethje To Just ‘Shut Up’ About Title Shot
Khabib Nurmagomedov thinks there’s no one more deserving for a title shot than teammate Islam Makhachev.
Nurmagomedov told Justin Gaethje that he should just “shut up” and admit that Makhachev deserves the chance.
“In last eight fight, you got finished three times Justin,” he said.
“You had an opportunity to become champion, but you fell asleep. Islam is on the nine win streak, three fight in 2021 and all finishes. Just shut up and admit that Islam deserves this title shot, not you.”
Since Nurmagomedov announced his retirement, the lightweight division has moved on. New champion Charles Oliveira is going to defend his title against former title challenger, Dustin Poirier, who defeated Conor McGregor twice in a row.
Nurmagomedov explained his reasoning that it should be Makhachev.
“I just shared with him my opinion,” he said. “My opinion Islam deserves this, you know? Of course, I understand that Justin is very exciting. Justin is like, he’s a real highlight. He’s a real highlight. But it’s my opinion.
“I think like anybody in UFC right now, doesn’t matter lightweight, light heavyweight, heavyweight, any weight classes – if you have nine (fight) win streak, you have to fight for the title.”
Nurmagomedov also said if Makhachev wins his next fight, the UFC will double up his protégé’s bonus money.
Makhachev and Beneil Dariush will find out who will be the next title challenger. Gaethje is coming off a dominant unanimous decision victory over Michael Chandler.
