Khabib vs. Ferguson? There’s One Catch
Khabib Nurmagomedov breezed his way past Michael Johnson at UFC 205, and along the way he has been talking virtually nonstop about a title opportunity.
Nurmagomedov, ranked No. 1 in the UFC’s lightweight rankings, was originally issued the shot at Eddie Alvarez and the UFC lightweight championship prior to McGregor being awarded the chance at the same event. Since then, Nurmagomedov has criticized the UFC, McGregor and UFC President Dana White. He has also issued an ultimatum of quitting the promotion if his next fight isn’t a title shot. This might be difficult to happen, however, as McGregor is currently on hiatus due to the upcoming birth of his child.
At the same time, some feel that the next lightweight title shot should go to Tony Ferguson, who is ranked at No. 2 and defeated former champion Rafael dos Anjos the week prior. Nurmagomedov now says he would be willing to face Ferguson to cement his title shot — but under one condition, according to his father and longtime coach, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov.
"We will not wait longer than 3 months," the elder Nurmagomedov said via Bloody Elbow. "We’ll wait for 3 months and at the 4th, we need an opponent. Let them give us any opponent. Even at 77kgs (welterweight)."
When asked if a fight with Donald Cerrone is possible, Abdulmanap said, "At this moment, it is better to fight with Ferguson — just to nail this thing down."
