Khabib’s Dad: Son Has “Options” For Next Fight

Even though Dustin Poirier went to war with Max Holloway earlier this year to become the interim lightweight champion, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov is under the impression that the Lousiana native is not the locked in opponent for his son’s return.

Khabib, who has been under suspension since October of last year following the UFC 239 brawl, is set for a return at UFC 242 in Abu Dhabi, with Poirier as the assumed opponent.

Yet, the elder Nurmagomedov told Sports.ru that his son has options.

”There are three opponents in development,” Abdulmanap told Sports.ru (via Bloody Elbow). “There is Ferguson, a rematch with Conor and Dustin Poirier. Khabib is preparing for any of them.”

“But for me it would be logical to fight with Dustin Poirier, and let McGregor fight someone else” taking the side of the current interim champion.

With Khabib already in training camp, per his coach Javier Mendez, the undisputed lightweight champion may already know his opponent. With McGregor recently photographed with a cast on his hand, and with Ferguson fighting Saturday night against Donald Cerrone, a win can possibly complicate things for Poirier, but it seems like the Diamond will look to crack Nurmagomedov in September.
