Khabib’s Father: Ferguson Before Conor
The father of UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, says a rematch with Conor McGregor is a possibility; however, there is someone first in line right now — Tony Ferguson.
The bitter rivals infamously met in the main event of UFC 229, which saw Nurmagomedov submit McGregor to retain the lightweight title. After the fight, Nurmagomedov attacked McGregor’s corner, while the Irish superstar brawled with two of the champion’s cornermen. Both were suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, and Nurmagomedov returned at UFC 242 in September to unify the title with then-interim champ Dustin Poirier.
Last month, McGregor requested via social media that he and Nurmagomedov rematch in Moscow.
Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov is open to the idea; however, he, like UFC President Dana White and most of the MMA community, declare Ferguson as the top contender and feels this fight that has been canceled four times needs to finally happen.
And Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov wants his son vs. Ferguson to take place at the legendary Madison Square Garden.
“If McGregor wants it, then Moscow is waiting for him,” Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov said. “He said once that he has more fans here than Khabib. We want to host him in Moscow, he is welcome — we are waiting. But before McGregor, we should finish our business with Ferguson. Because he had 28 fights and runs a 12-fight winning streak in the UFC, just like Khabib. Such winning streaks and such big fights have never happened in the UFC. So I think Madison Square Garden is a good place for this fight, but we won’t fight earlier than March.”
