Khamzat Chimaev Says He’s ‘Two More Fights’ From Getting UFC Title Shot
Khamzat Chimaev is certainly on the fast track when it comes to his UFC run.
Chimaev has just three bouts under the UFC banner but he’s already gaining quite the following. His first two UFC bouts were just 10 days apart. Chimaev stopped both John Phillips and Rhys McKee. He then knocked out Gerald Meerschaert in just 17 seconds.
Many have likened Chimaev to a more aggressive version of UFC Lightweight Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. So far he has showcased dominance but his confidence has also helped boost his popularity. Speaking to Dan Hardy, Chimaev said he feels he’s just two wins away from a title opportunity (h/t MMAMania.com).
“I think now, two more fights.”
Chimaev has been competing as a welterweight and a middleweight. To him, the weight class is irrelevant.
“I don’t know. It doesn’t matter for me. Both guys, maybe both same day, both fights, we’ll see.”
Chimaev also claimed that ranked fighters are constantly ducking him. He name-dropped several including Chris Weidman and Demian Maia.
“They ask me always, my manager calls me and says ‘Want to fight Thompson?’ I say yes. Then they say he don’t want fight. They say Chris Weidman, I say yes. Chris Weidman don’t want fight. Demian Maia don’t want fight. They say Neil Magny, I say doesn’t matter, don’t ask me. Just give me somebody. 19 December they say okay let’s go, 19 December. Then Darren Till say something, I say come to Abu Dhabi. He say ‘I have fight in December,’ I also have fight in December. We can fight here and then in December also.”
So far, Chimaev has amassed a pro MMA record of 9-0. He has yet to go the distance. Chimaev has six wins via knockout or TKO and three submissions.
