Amir Khan returned to the ring for the first time in nearly two years back in April, defeating Phil Lo Greco. Now, he’ll compete against Samuel Vargas in a WBA welterweight title eliminator on Sept. 8.
The winner of that bout is scheduled to challenge the winner of the WBA “Regular” Welterweight Title fight between champion Lucas Matthysse and Manny Pacquiao. Khan wants to challenge for a world title by the end of this year, and he feels it would mean even more if it were to be a title fight against the legendary Pacquiao.
“So, I’m getting close to them world title fights now,” Khan said. “Pacquiao, if he wins that fight, that would be amazing. I’ve been chasing Manny Pacquiao for a long, long time so now to get that fight, being a mandatory he can’t turn it down.”
Another discussed opponent for Khan in the future is British rival Kell Brook. Khan said he’d be interested in the fight, but only if Brook is a man of his word and drops to welterweight.
“Look, I’d like to get that fight done, I’d like to have that big fight with Kell Brook and we’re only getting closer to it — being with Eddie Hearn, being with Matchroom, we’re only getting closer,” Khan said. “That’s something we’re working towards as well.
“I mean it has to be at 147 and Kell, at my last fight when he was interviewed, admitted that he would come down and yes, the fight is gonna be at 147. So look, he has to agree to our terms. The fight has to be made, let’s do it at 147. I want the fight. Honestly, let’s do it.”
