Kisenosato, Hakuho Remain Unbeaten at New Year Basho

Remaining unbeaten at the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament, Ozeki Kisenosato and yokozuna Hakuho won hard-fought victories during Thursday’s competition, the fifth day of the 15-day tournament.

Kisenosato took on the strong 3-2 Mitakeumi and was able to shove the maegashira out of the ring at Ryogoku Kokugikan.

Hakuho had an equally dangerous battle with Shohozan in the second to last bout of the day. Almost losing balance and falling out of the ring, Hakuho was able to regain composure and get the victory. The Mongolian yokozuna remains unbeaten in the tournament.

Kisenosato is now 3-0 against his opponent Mitakeumi. Hakuho has battled Shohozan 12 times and emerged victorious in every contest.

In other Basho matchups, Ozeki Goeido made short work of Arawashi in their first meeting ever and picked up his third victory of the competition.

Mongolian yokozuna Kakuryu (3-2) lost his second straight to komusubi Takayasu.
