Kovalev On Canelo Fight: Right Time, Right Price

Why did Sergey Kovalev not put his August fight with Anthony Yarde on hold so he can fight Canelo Alvarez? The simple answer is that they weren’t offered enough sooner to do it.

“We weren’t getting the kind of offer we needed. By the time the offer came, we were pretty far along in (plans for) the Yarde fight,” the WBO light heavyweight champion’s promoter Kathy Duva said during a Tuesday conference call to discuss the November 2nd showdown in Las Vegas. “Plus, Sergey felt an obligation to go through with the event.”

“The dynamics of this negotiation just made that impossible,” Duva said of trying to place the fight somewhere that isn’t Las Vegas, where Alvarez has had the majority of his fights the past few years.

“We got the fight we wanted, we got the money we wanted. The way to get that money is to go to a place where you can generate it. We are realists.”
