Kovalev Ramps Up Trash Talk to Ward
Following the first fight between Sergey Kovalev and Andre Ward, the Ukranian light-heavyweight was livid that the judges awarded Ward with the decision win, and he let it be known. Now that the rematch has been announced, Kovalev isn’t taking his foot off the gas when it comes to trash talk.
This week it was confirmed that Kovalev vs. Ward II would take place on June 17. Their first fight happened in November, with Ward handing Kovalev his first loss with a unanimous decision victory. Kovalev, and many viewers and experts, believed that the decision was the wrong one.
After the rematch was announced, Kovalev posted a photo from the first fight on his Instagram page, a picture taken shortly after he dropped Ward with a punch early in the second round.
"Hey [Andre Ward]," Kovalev wrote, "You should call yourself Andre SOK Ward. ‘Son of Kovalev’. Here is a photo of you praying to your God."
The insult is a harsh one, given Ward’s nickname "Son of God" and its significance to his religious beliefs.
Whether Kovalev still holds his grudge against Ward or if he only intends to hype up the fight, he clearly has taken the figurative gloves off in the buildup to this rematch.
