Kovalev Returns in November
Following consecutive Light Heavyweight Championship losses to Andre Ward, Sergey Kovalev (30-2-1, 26 KOs) will return to the ring and look to get back to winning ways on Nov. 25.
Kovalev will face a rising contender in Vyacheslav Shabranskyy (19-1, 16 KOs) at The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York.
The then-undefeated Kovalev defeated Nathan Cleverly back in August 2013 to win the WBO Light Heavyweight Championship. After several title defenses of the WBO belt, Kovalev followed that up with a decision win over Bernard Hopkins in November 2014 to win the WBA (Super) and IBF Light Heavyweight titles.
He lost all of those titles to Ward back in November 2016 in a controvesersial unanimous decision loss. A rematch with Ward in June saw Kovalev finished for the first time in his career. Some controversy arose here, however, as the eighth-round TKO was produced from shots that looked to be at the belt line.
Shabranskyy had a winning streak of his own, winning his first 17 fights in a row — 14 of them by knockout — before losing his most recent contest, a seventh-round TKO loss to Sullivan Barrera back in December 2016.
