Kovalev To Fight Eleider Alvarez This Summer

Following a successful first defense of his WBO light heavyweight title, Sergey Kovalev will return to the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden this summer.

In a story first reported by Dan Rafael, Kovalev will defend his title against Eleider Alvarez during the summer, in a date to be determined by HBO.

Kathy Duva who promotes Kovalev, confirmed that a contract had been signed for a fight with Alvarez, instead of Kovalev defending his title against Marcus Browne.

Browne, who gave up a mandatory title shot against IBF light heavyweight champion, Artur Beterbiev for a fight with Kovalev, was recently arrested for a domestic violence charge.  The misdemeanor charge would have Duva change strategy and ink a deal with Alvarez, which may lead to a lawsuit from Browne’s camp.
