Kovalev Trains With McGirt For Alvarez Rematch

Following a heartbreaking loss to Eleider Alvarez in August, Sergey Kovalev has decided to enlist Buddy McGirt in his quest to win back his WBO light heavyweight title.

Kovalev has bounced around trainers since his bitter break-up with trainer John David Jackson, following his second loss to Andre Ward in June 2017.

After taking the upset loss to Alvarez, Kovalev’s manager Egis Kilmas told Boxing Scene that “he was looking for trainers and Buddy came into the picture and he said he wanted to try, he went to Buddy.”

“It’s not far away from his house, he trained a couple times and said he liked it, he wants it and they made a decision to work together.”

When asked if Kovalev will listen to his new trainer as they prepare for Alvarez, Kilmas said that “[Kovalev] has no choice now. He has to listen to somebody because the formula that used to work for himself, didn’t work.”

“Break it or make it, of course it is… He understands that, he’s a bright man, he understands what is what. So he has no choice, he has to understand now.”
