Kovalev vs. Yarde Live Results

Sergey Kovalev returns home to Russia, as he defends the WBO light heavyweight championship against Anthony Yarde in the main event of a Top Rank Boxing card.

There has been plenty of storyline revolving around this bout, including a desire from Canelo Alvarez to challenge Kovalev. Alvarez unsuccessfully attempted to give Yarde a step-aside offer he’d like, and Kovalev elected to focus on his mandatory challenger. This marked Alvarez’s first time not fighting Mexican Independence Day weekend since 2015

A title fight between Kovalev and Alvarez, however, can still take place if Kovalev manages to defeat Yarde today. In fact, Kovalev’s manager claims a deal between the two parties is in place so long as Kovalev comes out on top.

Kovalev vs. Yarde was also scheduled to take place in June, but difficulties involving the Russian investors who had the rights to the fight forced a postponement.

For Kovalev, this marks the first title defense of his third reign, which began when he defeated Eleider Alvarez back in February. That fight was revenge for Kovalev, who pummeled Eleider Alvarez for six rounds in their initial August 2018 encounter before the Colombian knocked him out in sudden, shocking fashion in the seventh.

Kovalev, who was undefeated with 30 wins and one draw after July 2016, has lost three of his last six — which includes two losses to Andre Ward in Ward’s final career fights, along with the loss to Eleider Alvarez.

Yarde, who will be competing for his first major boxing world championship, cannot be overlooked, however. Yarde has stopped all but one of the foes he’s come across in his career since his 2015 debut, and he’s finished 16 straight. This will be Yarde’s second time competing outside his native England, with the first coming in September 2016 for a fight in the U.S. at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Should Yarde come out on top, or Canelo Alvarez cannot agree to a deal with whoever walks out the WBO champ, that man — either Kovalev or Yarde — could pursue a unification bout with the winner of October’s meeting between IBF champion Artur Beterbiev and WBC champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk.
