Kovalev Will Not Fight Canelo Next
Late last week it seemed that Canelo-GGG III would not happen, as Canelo Alvarez was rumored first to be fighting Callum Smith, then that rumor was pushed aside for Canelo wanting to move up to light heavyweight and fight WBO champion Sergey Kovalev.
Per Michael Benson of TalkSPORT, Kovalev will instead finalize a deal for later this summer to fight mandatory challenger Anthony Yarde in Kovalev’s native Russia, as Kathy Duva, Kovalev’s promoter and Yarde’s promoter Frank Warren are closer to a deal.
The potential Smith-Alvarez fight may also not be an option for the WBC “franchise” champion, as Smith is weighing an offer to fight WBO super middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders in August.
With two major negotiating options go away, one can assume Canelo-GGG III will happen this September, but the issue of location continues to stand in the way on Golovkin’s end, with the former unified middleweight champion refusing to fight in Las Vegas, the site of their first two fights.
