Kovalev-Yarde Finally Near Deal For Russia

After a June 11th emergency purse bid was cancelled, Sergey Kovelev’s promoter Kathy Duva and Anthony Yarde’s promoter, Frank Warren met last weekend in Las Vegas regarding a potential fight between the current WBO champion and challenger.

The fight was initially scheduled for June 29th in Kovalev’s hometown of Chelyabinsk, Russia, but negotiation issues stood in the way of the fight being finalized, let alone announced.

“It’s not our fault it didn’t happen,” Warren told BoxingScene.com. “So, we had a meeting over the weekend here, and hopefully we’ll be in a position next week to announce it. We signed for it once already.”

Russian investors were behind the initial June 29th fight night and may have had an issue developing the funds needed to make the fight happen. Kovalev and Yarde’s teams have been assured by the investors that a September fight would be a go.

“It says a lot about my guy that he’s willing to go there,” Warren said of going to Kovalev’s hometown. “I mean, if it does happen, it’ll be in the other guy’s backyard. But a few things have got to happen before it’s announced. But we want it. We want it to happen.”
