Kovalev-Yarde Purse Bid Postponed To June 24th

For the third time since the fight was ordered, a purse bid between WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev and top challenger Anthony Yarde has been suspended.

The WBO formally postponed the bid, which was set for June 11th, due to a request made by Frank Warren, Yarde’s promoter.

“I hereby acknowledge receipt of your email communication dated June 8th 2019, whereby on behalf of Main Events Promotions you indicate no objection to the purse bid postponement request submitted by Mr. Heath on behalf of Queensberry Promotions,” Luis Batista, chairman of WBO Championship Committee wrote to Main Events’ attorney Patrick English . “In consideration thereof, this Committee hereby grants a fourteen-day (14) extension in order for the parties to reach an agreement.”

The now June 24th bid has a location change as-well, moving from the Jamaica section of Queens New York to WBO headquarters in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Winning the title for a third time in February in a rematch against Eleider Alvarez, Kovalev is set to make his first defense against the undefeated Yardem who was named the mandatory after knocking out Travis Reeves in March.

A purse bid, called upon by Main Events, Kovalev’s promoter would be pushed from April 8th to April 15th, then called off after Kathy Duva, Main Events CEO, said a deal was in-place for a June 29th fight from Kovalev’s hometown of Chelyabinsk, Russia,.

Then the two sides fell into radio silence, with Warren openly wondering what was actually going on, with the both sides meeting this weekend in Las Vegas, as Warren is there for Tyson Fury’s fight with Tom Schwarz.

While the fight is still set for Russia, Boxing Scene is reporting that local investors seem to have undisclosed issues with the current situation.

If there is no solution by June 24th, and no further objections are made, the purse bid will see any promoters registered with the WBO being able to submit a minimum bid of $300,000 with a date and a location for the mandated title fight.
