Kovalev’s Manager: Deal in Place for Canelo…
The manager of WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev, Egis Klimas, claims that an agreement between Kovalev and two-division WBA champion Canelo Alvarez is in place, and it will go into effect if Kovalev is able to defeat Anthony Yarde next week.
Per Boxing Scene, Klimas claims that Alvarez and Golden Boy Promotions are waiting for Kovalev’s victory before making the agreement official. This matches a report from last week that said Alvarez was waiting on the result of the Kovalev-Yarde fight before picking his next opponent.
A fight for the pair could take place in either November or December.
“Canelo has stated he doesn’t want to fight anybody else. He wants to fight Kovalev,” Klimas said. “He’s waiting right now on this fight result. The fight against Yarde is a big motivation for Sergey, too. Winning this fight against Yarde will lead him to Alvarez and it’s almost like putting the signature on the contract to Alvarez.”
Klimas added that initial financial talks dragged, calling the money offered by Canelo’s team in the beginning “ridiculous” before things became more negotiable.
Golden Boy’s Robert Diaz teased earlier this week a fight announcement for Alvarez would be coming “very soon.”
