Lara: I Want To Beat Canelo Again
If you read this headline and you were confused, well, in the history books, Erislandy Lara is dead wrong.
Lara faced Canelo Alvarez in July 2014, losing to the Mexican superstar by a split decision. While some, especially Lara believe he defeated Alvarez, Lara has had to live with the mark on his record.
The American Dream gained a measure of revenge this weekend defeating Alvarez’ brother Ramon winning the WBA regular light middleweight championship.
“It was a good story, beat the brother of the man who stole a win from me,” Lara said to BoxingScene.com . “But this is just a sport. It’s never personal. It was gamesmanship before the fight, but never any kind of hate.”
“It wasn’t the best situation, him being late to the weigh-in and not making weight,” said Lara of Alvarez who was nearly five pounds over the 154 pound limit. “But we’re professionals and we’re two men. I just felt like letting him know everything will be alright and that I appreciated the opportunity to still fight for my old title.”
“I would love to fight Canelo Alvarez a second time” Lara told BoxingScene.com, showing interest in facing Alvarez on November 2nd in Las Vegas.
“Let’s see what happens,” Lara said of his possibly jumping ahead of Sergey Kovalev, the current frontrunner to fight Canelo.
“Our managers can talk and do their job to get us back in the ring. It can be at 154 or 160, wherever the best opportunity makes the most sense. I just beat his brother and I would love the chance to beat Canelo… again.”
