Lara to Defend Title Against Yuri Foreman
Junior middleweight IBO and WBA champion Erislandy Lara has been criticized for the caliber of opponents he has faced in his four title defenses, and that is unlikely to change with his next one.
Lara will defend his belts against Yuri Foreman, a former title holder with a lackluster lineup of recent opponents. The fight will serve as the main event of a Jan. 13 card on SPIKE. The event will take place at Hialeah Park Racing & Casino in Miami, Florida according to ESPN.
Foreman was knocked out by Miguel Cotto in 2010 to lose his WBA junior middleweight title. He lost his next fight to Pawel Wolak, getting stopped in the sixth round.
"I’m very excited to be making my return to the ring in front of my Cuban fans in Miami on Spike," Lara said. "Yuri Foreman is a former world champion who is dedicated to this sport and will be looking to win another world title. I expect nothing but the best from him. On fight night, I’m making another statement and going for the knockout."
Lara (19-2-2) fought only once in 2016, beating Vanes Martirosyan by unanimous decision in May. He has won his last four fights against significantly outmatched opponents since losing to Canelo Alvarez in 2014.
