Lara Wants Charlo After Hurd Injury

Even though his last fight was a loss, Erislandy Lara claims he is ready and able to challenge WBC junior middleweight champion Jermell Charlo.

Lara had been ordered to a mandatory rematch by the WBA against Jarrett Hurd, who beat Lara in April for his WBA and IBO super welterweight titles via split decision.

Per a report from Boxing Scene, Showtime was positioning a Charlo-Hurd unification for the fall, but has been put on pause with the news that Hurd underwent shoulder surgery earlier this month.

Jermall Charlo would take a majority decision win against Austin Trout, someone who both Lara and Hurd had defeated in the past.

“Now that Hurd is injured and our rematch will be pushed back – the fight to make is me versus Charlo,” Lara told Boxing Scene.

“It’s a fight that makes sense, two of the best versus each other and another great fight for the fans. Charlo is a friend and former stablemate – but that doesn’t mean anything… this is boxing and it’s a business. I’m ready to fight Charlo anytime! I hope he’s also willing to fight the best.”
