Larry Holmes Puts On Show For Last Bout Vs. Eric Esch – July 27, 2002 (This Day In Boxing History)

Larry Holmes ended his career on a high note.

On July 27, 2002, Holmes closed out his 29-year pro career by edging Eric “Butterbean” Esch with a unanimous decision victory in Norfolk, Virginia.

The 52-year-old Holmes had been out of action for 21 months and gained 80 pounds in weight, but the former heavyweight champion was able to stay in control throughout the fight – mainly behind his left jab.

All Butterbean was able to do was walk forward and look for an opening. But it never came.

In the final seconds of the 10th round, Holmes caught Esch with a left hand that sent his opponent stumbling backwards, which the referee ruled a knockdown.
