Lawler-Dos Anjos Winner Gets Title Shot

When the Michael Bisping vs. Georges St. Pierre fight was first made official, UFC President Dana White hinted Tyron Woodley might defend the UFC Welterweight Title next against Robbie Lawler. Earlier this week, with Woodley out for the rest of 2017 due to injury, Rafael dos Anjos said the bout between him and Lawler this coming December should be for the interim title of the weight division.

And now, White has granted both Lawler and dos Anjos an opportunity. On Friday, White announced their bout, which headlines UFC on Fox 26 — taking place from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, on Dec. 16 — will determine the next contender to Woodley and the welterweight title.

Originally winning the welterweight title from Johny Hendricks back at UFC 181 in December 2014, Lawler made two successful title defenses before losing the belt to Woodley at UFC 201 back in July 2016. Lawler rebounded from the loss, however, with a win over Donald Cerrone back at UFC 214 this past July.

A former UFC Lightweight Champion, dos Anjos made his welterweight debut back in June against Tarec Saffiedine, winning by unanimous decision. He recently defeated Neil Magny via first-round submission last month at UFC 215.
