Lawrence Okolie Vs. Chris Billam-Smith Preliminary And Undercard Live Results, Recaps: Sam Eggington Stops Joe Pigford In A Fifth-Round TKO

Lawrence Okolie and Chris Billam-Smith fight it out for the WBO cruiserweight title on May 27th, 2023, live from the Vitality Stadium, Bournemouth.

Okolie is considered the odds-on favourite, given that he is unbeaten in his 19 professional fights. And as part of that process, he will be defending the belt for a fourth time.

The fight throws up an intriguing dynamic, as Okolie gets to grips with his new trainer SugarHill Steward.

In addition, Okolie and Billam-Smith are well aware of each other having been sparring partners and very close in the gym.

Both have something to prove. Okolie’s unanimous-decision victory over David Light failed to impress due to the lack of a knockout.

Meanwhile, Billam-Smith will be looking to show that his knock out of Armend Xhoxhaj in his previous fight was not a one-off.

With that being said, the undercard starts at 7 p.m. BST / 3 p.m. ET. In contrast, the main card is expected to begin at 10 p.m. BST / 6 p.m. ET.

Sam Eggington vs. Joe Pigford – super welterweight

It was a very cagey start by both fighters, as no punch was thrown until the first half of the opening round.

Eggington took the center ring and caught Pigford with a few left overhands followed by some vicious jabs, as he took the opening round.

In the following round, Eggington’s quick hand speed led to some dynamic combinations. Pigford hit back with some body shots, as Eggington took control.

Eggington continued in the same manner, as he put Pigford on the ropes. Eggington’s overhand right was followed by a body shot with such precision. Pigford hit back with a left, as both fighters looked to exchange.

In the fourth, both fighters landed heavy overhands as the pace picked up. Pigford’s legs were shaky but the fighter made it to the end of the bell.

That didn’t last long in the following round as Eggington continued to land through the guard as the referee waved off the fight.

And in doing so, Eggington became the first man to beat Pigford.
