Lemieux Unimpressive in Decision Over Rios
Fight fans may have wanted to know where David Lemieux has been since that brutal beat down at the hands of "GGG", he was at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada Saturday night. Lemieux (36-3, 32 KOs) fought Christian Fabian Rios (21-8-3, 6 KOs) to a 10 round unanimous decision victory.
Lemieux landed the harder punches throughout the night, but Rios’ weaker punches seemed to bother him. Rios was technical enough to avoid most of the head shots that Lemieux threw, but he was still hit with quite a few. The fight was scored 100-90, 99-91 and 100-90 all in favor of David Lemieux. Lemieux, 27, weighed in at 163lbs for the fight but he looked less than toned around his midsection. This could speak to a lack luster training camp or injury issues that may have prevented Lemieux from training properly.
“With this win, David Lemieux has one again demonstrated himself to be a dynamic and resilient fighter,” said Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya. “This additional victory will open new doors for Lemieux, and we can’t wait to see what the next champion in his boxing career will bring.”
Lemieux is ranked #4 WBC, #4 WBO, #7 IBF. A rematch between IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin does not seem likely considering Lemieux’s first showing with the champ. A fight with WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders seems more along the lines of a winnable fight for Lemieux, Sanders has to satisfy his mandatory WBO belt defenses first.
Golden Boy looks to bring the career of David Lemieux back on track but a fair at best decision win against Rios was not the start he was looking for.
